About — Anthea Buys

Anthea is a curator, researcher and writer living in South Africa. She is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the SARChI Chair in South Afrcan Art and Visual Culture at the University of Johannesburg, and is interested in collective fabulation, unlikely place-making and the intersections of art and communities. Her PhD research looked at New Babylon, the interdisciplinary life’s work of the Dutch artist and architect Constant Nieuwenhuys.

She has curated exhibitions for the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town Kai Art Centre in Tallinn, Tallinn Art Hall, Hordaland Art Centre in Bergen (where she was director, 2014-2017), WIELS Project Space in Brussels, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and other institutions. Her most recent project is a retrospective exhibition of the South African, France-based performance artist Steven Cohen (Steven Cohen: Long Life, Iziko South African National Gallery, December 2025 - June 2026).
